GAMES

The very first board game DJ ever played was Candyland because it was easy, which was perfect for when we decided he was ready to have the attention span, patience and understanding of board games. But now these are his top favorites!

Board games are SOOOO great for development. They work on so many skills: taking turns, learning how to be a good loser (and winner!), listening to directions, following rules, strategy, critical thinking, educational, social skills, laughter, competitive nature, the list goes on...

MATH & READING

Most of DJ's math and reading is just imbedded into our daily activities, games, sensory table setups and obviously our home school lessons. But here's a few great learning games and tools we use often!

SENSORY PLAY

The sensory table we got DJ when he was 18 months old is the IKEA Flisat table and stools. This table has been the most used item in the house by far. It's perfect for sensory play (you need to buy the bins to go with it) and also as a table to work on, eat on and play on. It's an absolute must have if you have kids!

All my setups have been created by me (check out my Sensory Table highlight on my Instagram page) but I also sell a handful of sensory bin kits on my Etsy site like these three examples below: DJs Busy Books

Items to have on-hand for sensory engagement:

• pom poms

• colored rice

• water beads

• different sized scoopers

• wooden or plastic tweezers

• kinetic sand

• holiday/seasonal trinkets

• wooden inserts

TOYS WITH A PURPOSE

I do NOT like most toys. Toys clutter the house, get used for a few days and then become boring to play with. This is why we don't have many toys in our house. In fact, we really don't have any unless there's a good, solid purpose to them. These are some of the most used and favorite toys in the house that spark imagination, creativity, stem/engineering skills, critical thinking, fine motor skills and promotes independence.

  • ALL imaginary play food for the kitchen is the brand: Melissa & Doug. I love the quality of their wooden food.

  • The Play-Doh mats come in a variety of themes for any holiday or season of the year! We have a few different sets.
